East of Cabarete the coast road runs for two hours through the least-visited and, to many eyes, the most beautiful stretch of the north shore: Sabaneta de Yásica, Gaspar Hernández, Río San Juan with its mangrove lagoon, Playa Grande's golf course, the cliffs of Cabrera and the rice fields around Nagua. Inland, the road climbs to Jarabacoa and the mountains.

This is land and farm country. Fincas of several hectares with rivers and mature trees, lots on cliffs over the sea, the occasional villa built by someone who found the spot first. Prices are a fraction of Sosúa's. Services are thinner: you plan your supermarket runs, and you want a good relationship with your neighbours.
