About Puerto Plata
Puerto Plata is the provincial capital and the only real city on the north coast: a working port, a Victorian old town being restored block by block, a cable car up Isabel de Torres, the cruise terminals at Amber Cove and Taino Bay, and the hospitals, courts and government offices everything else on the coast depends on.
For buyers it means two different markets. West of the city, Costambar and Cofresí are established beach communities with villas and condos a few minutes from the airport road. Playa Dorada, the original resort zone, has golf-course condos at prices that have not caught up with Sosúa. And at Punta Bergantín, east of town, the government and private developers are building the first new resort district the north coast has seen in decades, with pre-construction pricing to match.
Puerto Plata rewards buyers who want city services and are patient: prices are lower, the pace is slower, and the next five years will change the skyline.
