About the Dominican north coast
The north coast runs from Puerto Plata east through Sosúa and Cabarete to Río San Juan, Cabrera and Nagua, and on to the Samaná peninsula. Most of the properties on this site are here, and so are the agents who list them.
The towns
Puerto Plata is the provincial capital, with the port, the old town and the airport, about twenty-five minutes from Sosúa. Sosúa has the calm bay, a long-settled international community and most of the gated communities. Cabarete is the kitesurfing beach, with condos along the sand and hills behind. East of it the coast road passes Sabaneta de Yásica and the cliffs around Cabrera to Río San Juan, and about two and a half hours from Sosúa you reach Las Terrenas on the Samaná peninsula.
Why people buy here
Direct flights from North America and Europe land at Puerto Plata, with Santiago ninety minutes away as the alternative. The water is warm all year and the high season runs from December to April, which is also when the rental demand is. Foreign buyers own property outright, in their own name, with the same rights as a Dominican owner. Prices are quoted in US dollars.
What you can buy
Villas in gated communities with their own pool, condos a short walk from the beach, houses in town, and lots with a title ready to build on. New developments along the coast sell off plan, many of them with the CONFOTUR tax exemption. The buying guide explains the process, the costs and what to check before you reserve.
Getting around
You will want a car: Sosúa to Cabarete is a quarter of an hour, Puerto Plata to Sosúa under half an hour, and the coast road east is paved all the way to Samaná. Supermarkets, clinics, international schools and the hospital are between Puerto Plata and Cabarete; the area pages list what is near each town.
